Background
Electric vehicles (EVs) provide unique opportunities for both economic growth and emissions reductions. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that global EV sales exceeded 10 million in 2022, with 14% of all new cars sold being electric, up from 9% in 2021 and less than 5% in 2020. China and the EU are the leading EV markets. Through 2022, China accounted for 60% of global electric car sales. Europe is the second largest market, with over 15% year-on-year growth of EV sales in 2022, compared to 2021. IEA also projects that the share of EV sales will increase to 35% by 2030, with China and the EU remaining the major players.
Transitioning toward EVs is causing profound market impacts on energy, automobiles, power batteries, critical minerals, and the remaining parts of the supply chain. To ensure sustainable EV development, both China and the EU have issued incentive policies. China is now updating its mid- to long-term EV development goals and strategy, improving dual-credit policies, establishing a sustainable battery policy system, etc. The EU has passed legislation to match their electrification ambitions, including for battery manufacturing, critical mineral recycling to meet the demand for EVs, etc. As two leaders of EV development, effective collaborations between China and the EU not only impact EV development in China and the EU, but also significantly influence the global EV transition. Therefore, this “Win-Win on Global EV Transition: EU-China EV and Supply Chain Dialogue” will be organized to facilitate discussions among think tanks, enterprises, and entrepreneurs from China and the EU to share insights on trends and needs, and propose collaborations under the new economic and social dynamics in China and the EU.
