Background
To achieve net zero emissions globally, and to ensure access to affordable and reliable energy, a transition to renewable energy is not a choice but an imperative that demands immediate attention. At the 2023 New Delhi Summit, G20 leaders agreed to pursue tripling renewable energy capacity globally by 2030. However, a significant impediment to realizing this swift energy transition is the funding gap that persists in energy infrastructure. Currently, there is a USD 2.9 trillion investment gap in the global energy sector (Global Infrastructure Outlook), most of which is distributed across emerging and developing economies whose clean energy-related spending remains stagnant at 2015 levels (World Energy Investment 2022, IEA).
China is dramatically expanding its domestic deployment of renewable energy. The total installed capacity of renewable energy in China has surpassed 1,300 GW, accounting for 48.8% of the country’s total installed capacity. Chinese solar capacity installations alone reached 78 GW in the first half of 2023, nearly three-quarters of the 106 GW capacity installed by the rest of the world combined in 2022. Meanwhile, China has also been a leading manufacturer for solar PV panels and wind turbines.
EF China launched this Dialogue Series in September 2023 on the sidelines of an international Energy Transition Forum in Suzhou, an eastern China manufacturing powerhouse city. The purpose of this series is to establish a communication and advisory platform for various stakeholders and unlock green finance for renewable energy development and deployment to achieve the net zero transition.
This new edition during COP28 will be focused on innovative solutions to finance renewable energy in China and developing countries. It will be a valuable opportunity to exchange global experiences and best practices, including from China, which is making strides towards achieving its dual carbon goals as the world’s highest clean energy investor.
