Environmental Information Disclosure of Financial Institutions Against the Backdrop of China’s Carbon Peaking and Neutrality Goals (2021 Edition)
In December 2021, supported by Energy Foundation China, the Beijing Institute of Finance and Sustainability and the Modern Finance Research Institute of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China released this report reviewing how financial institutions in China are disclosing environmental information of their portfolios.
The report analyzes the current environmental information disclosure policy and practice of domestic and international financial institutions, identifies the key bottlenecks, and provides improvement suggestions, especially regarding how to quantify environmental impact. Some of the research informed one of China’s first green finance standards, Guidelines for Environmental Information Disclosure of Financial Institutions, issued by the People’s Bank of China, the central bank, in July 2021.
