In November 2022, with the support of Energy Foundation China, the Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning and Design and Peking University’s Territorial Planning and Design Institute released this report on how to integrate Beijing’s three non-motorized traffic networks of pedestrian-bicycle lanes, greenways, and waterfront spaces.

Greater integration of the triple networks is recognized as a key strategy to structurally optimize the urban non-motorized traffic system and help increase green travel. This report identifies key challenges Beijing are facing, before it proposes a comprehensive strategy toolbox, including principles, roadmaps, and matching mechanisms and actions. The authors hope this study provides non-motorized traffic solutions for Beijing that can be implemented widely, and even inspire more cities to adopt similar actions, considering Beijing’s broader impacts.
