From 2022 to 2023, Energy Foundation China supported a research team led by Lu Keding from Peking University to study how to cut ozone, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and greenhouse gas emissions at the same time. The team published two reports in May 2023, one about longer-term strategies for the synergic control in China, while the other zooms in on the Greater Bay Area that comprises Guangdong province and neighboring Hong Kong and Macao, China’s two special administrative regions.

The reports propose the theory of synergetic control of ozone, PM2.5, and greenhouse gas, before it presents a quantitative index system and implementation program for the synergistic emission mitigation on national and regional scales.

Researchers hope this project can provide more scientific evidence for the synergistic control, and for regional air quality control measures by the Greater Bay Area in the future.
