Background

In 2018, Energy Foundation China (EF China) established its flagship Long-Term Strategy for Decarbonization Task Force (LTS), which is committed to exploring a multi-win low-GHG emission development path for China. Up to today, the LTS has initiated three stages of this flagship project (LTS I, II, and III), in close collaboration with a group of leading think tanks around the world. The outcomes of LTS I informed China’s official announcement in 2020 of the goal of carbon neutrality by 2060. On this basis, we have launched the second and third phases to discuss China’s low-carbon transformation implementation roadmap for 2035 and 2060 (LTS II) and carbon neutrality technologies (LTS III). Meanwhile, EF China has published two installments of the Synthesis Report on China’s Carbon Neutrality, illustrating China’s new growth story and roadmaps of electrification that underpin the new development pathways. We hope the efforts will help put China onto a trajectory of sustainable prosperity and carbon neutrality.

Year 2024 marks a critical juncture for reviewing past progress and prospecting into the years ahead. During COP28, EF China will host the third meeting of the International Advisory Roundtable on China’s Long-Term Strategy for Low-GHG Emission Development to discuss the progress to-date of the LTS Task Force and to seek comments on the upcoming 2024 Synthesis Report and future flagship project design. We hope the discussion can assist China’s policymakers and researchers in developing ambitious, forward-looking decarbonization strategies.
