Power Crunch: Accelerating the Coal-to-Renewables Transition in the Face of Recent Headwinds

时间 2022-11-15
起始时间 21:30 结束时间 23:00
地点 Albatros Laguna Vista Sharm El Sheikh hotel, Meeting Room 1

Background

In 2021, China experienced a “power crisis” arising from acute energy shortages in over 20 provinces. As it was still recovering from the 2021 power crunch, China went through its worst heatwave on record this summer, which led to severe power shortages for its largest hydropower exporters. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has meanwhile further elevated broad debates over coal’s fundamental role in China’s energy system and the appropriate balance between green development and energy security.

In the face of these recent headwinds, this panel will convene experts coming from philanthropy, government, trade associations, and INGOs to discuss how China can continue to phase out coal while boosting the deployment of renewable energy as an immediate no-regret, scalable solution for energy security, economic recovery, and the climate emergency.
