According to estimates by the International Institute of Refrigeration, carbon emissions associated with the coolling sector are about 4.14 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent per year, or 7.8 percent of the total global GHG emissions.

Several years ago, Energy Foundation China (EF China) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) to advance low carbon development in Southeast Asia. Last month, EF China achieved an important outcome of joint work conducted under that MOU on one of the key priorities identified—cooling efficiency.

In July 2023, the China Building Materials Academy released this research report propsing a pathway toward carbon neutrality for China’s cement industry. The research was supported by Energy Foundation China.

In 2022, supported by Energy Foundation China, the Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Center completed this research report analyzing how China should reuse controlled substances under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

In July 2022, with support from Energy Foundation China, the China Council for an Energy Efficient Economy released this report reviewing low carbon technologies that are applicable to the Chinese iron & steel and cement sectors and can help them achieve China’s dual goals for carbon peaking and neutrality.
